Our goal in the Mat-Su YMCA Aquatics is to give every child a chance to grow and succeed while learning to swim. Our swim lessons are taught by trained instructors and offer a low student-teacher ratio to help children safely develop their skills and confidence in the water.

Lessons are between 5-7 pm either Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday and run twice a week for four weeks at the prescribed time slot.

Our commitment is for your child to learn to be water safe.

Where’s your pool?

The Mat-Su YMCA rents a private saltwater pool for swim lessons.  The pool is located at 690 W Cindy Circle.  Look for the SWIM on the side of the brown building.  Come in the door and down the stairs to find the locker rooms.  The pool is accessed through the locker rooms.

What classes do you teach?

We offer group lessons with a low student-teacher ratio, parent/child classes, adult lessons, and private lessons.

Group Lessons

Group lessons designed for children ages 3-5 and school-age children.  Beginner class sizes are capped at 3 students per teacher to optimize children’s growth and confidence in the water.

For children ages 3-5:

Preschool Level 1/2 – Beginners

  • In this level, children learn to blow bubbles, float, and start to move independently.

Preschool Level 3 – Advanced Beginners

  • In this level, children learn to float independently on their front and back, as well as gliding, kicking, and rolling from front to back and back to front.

For school-age children:

Youth Level 1 – Beginners

  • Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it, while learning basic swimming skills.

  • In this level, children learn to blow bubbles, float, and move with assistance.

Youth Level 2 – Advanced Beginners

  • Students will build on the skills learned in Level 1, moving towards performing them independently.

  • In this level, children learn to float on their front and back, as well as gliding, kicking, and rolling from front to back and back to front.

Youth Level 3/4 – Intermediate

  • Students will have additional guided practice to help students improve their skills.  They will gain confidence during swim lessons, improve their stroke, and gain additional aquatic skills.

  • In this level, children learn basic front crawl (freestyle) and backstroke as well as breaststroke and dolphin kick.

  • To enter this level, children must be able to submerge their whole body, float comfortably, and swim independently without assistance on their front and back.

Private Swim Lessons

Private swim lessons are also available for one-on-one instruction. Please email matsuswim@ymcaalaska.org for more information and availability.

Parent-Child Classes

These lessons are designed to help the parent help his or her child become more comfortable in the water.  This class is for children under the age of 3.

Adult Lessons

Since we have a limited number of lessons slots, adult lessons are scheduled by request.  If you would like to sign up for adult lessons, please contact the Aquatics department at least two weeks prior to the start of the session so we can add the class to the schedule.

Group lessons are $115 per session of eight lessons.

Registration for lessons

Registration opens two Fridays prior to the start of the session.  To sign up for swim sessions, please contact the Mat-Su YMCA at 907-373-9622 after 9am or email the Aquatics Department at matsuswim@ymcaalaska.org.  If you have received a message regarding lessons, contact us as soon as possible as slots fill up fast.

Families are urged to re-register the last day of your current session after receiving your certificate. Please indicate which level your child has completed when registering.

For returning students you can now register online by clicking here.  Make sure to select Mat-Su Swim Lessons, instead of YMCA Swimming, so you sign up for Wasilla lessons rather than Anchorage lessons.
